On AIM, how can I change my buddy icon to a pic i have?? Please help!!?

I know HOW to change, by settings and expressions and all that, but every time i choose a picture, it says, ';Error: The image file you have selected is too big. The maximum size allowed is 7168 bytes. (IM-0704)'; what duz that mean and how can i get my image to get smaller or the size allowed, which right now is 11,338 bytes. can i get it smaller??? please help!!On AIM, how can I change my buddy icon to a pic i have??
